Austin police homicide detectives are investigating an incident that left one man dead early Thursday in Southeast Austin.

Officers went to check on a person near the intersection of Todd Lane and East St. Elmo Road after receiving a 911 call at 12:30 a.m., said Austin police Officer Bino Cadenas.

As police canvassed the area, they received more information from the 911 caller that a man had been shot and that he was in a homeless camp in the 4400 block of Todd Lane, Cadenas said.

The camp is just south of Texas 71 and east of Interstate 35 South.

Officers arrived at the camp at 12:49 a.m. and found a man with "trauma to his body,“ Cadenas said.

Austin-Travis County EMS medics responded and at 12:59 a.m. the man was pronounced dead, Cadenas said.

“What we do know is the male was alone in the homeless camp and he does have trauma to his body. We cannot confirm whether this was a gunshot wound or not,” he said.

The Travis County medical examiner’s office will determine if the incident is a homicide, Cadenas said.

People with information on the incident can call 911 or the Austin police homicide tip line at 512-477-3588.
