We know Austin is a hot destination for job-seekers.
But where, you might wonder, are all the workers moving here from?
According to a new LinkedIn Workforce Report, Central Texas gained the most workers from Houston, the San Francisco Bay Area and New York, in that order.
The figures are based on the number of people who changed their location on their LinkedIn profile in the past 12 months.
But Central Texas’ workforce is pretty mobile, so Austin also topped the list of cities that experienced the most total migration — or, in simple terms, the most workers moving into and out of a city. Next on the list were Orange County and San Diego.
For every 10,000 LinkedIn members in Austin, 569.5 arrived or left the city in the past 12 months, report said.
So when workers leave Austin, where do they go? The top three destinations, according to the report, are Seattle, Denver and Nashville.
Austin is benefiting from San Francisco’s skyrocketing cost of living, said Guy Berger, LinkedIn’s economist.
The net number of workers moving to the Bay area dropped 17 percent from February to May.
The cities gaining the most workers from San Francisco over the past 12 months were Seattle, Portland and Austin.
Austin’s job market has a broad appeal, Berger said.
“Overall, it’s a nice big talent magnet,” he said. “While Austin is still pulling a lot of people from San Francisco, it’s also attracting large amounts of people from the Midwest, the Northeast, and from Houston as well.”
Meanwhile, he said, “the only places attracting large amounts of people from Austin are Seattle and Denver.”
