Austin police have identified a pedestrian who was killed earlier this month while crossing West William Cannon Drive in South Austin as 34-year-old Armando Casares.

A preliminary police investigation found that Casares was crossing multiple lanes of traffic in the 1400 block, just east of Menchaca Road around 9:40 p.m. on Nov. 6. Police said he was not in the crosswalk.

A driver in a white Lexus RX, traveling east on William Cannon in the middle lane, struck Casares, police said.

“The driver of the Lexus stayed on scene and is cooperating with the investigation,” police said in a statement Wednesday. “No charges are expected to be filed at this time.”

Casares was taken to St. David’s South Austin Medical Center but died Nov. 13 from his injuries, police said.

Austin police said Casares’ case is the city’s 73rd traffic death so far this year. At this time in 2018, police recorded 65 traffic deaths.
