SAN MARCOS — Senior linebacker Bryan London II has done many things on the football field in his first three seasons at Texas State. He passed another milestone last week with his first career interception, a one-handed grab on the goal line that stopped a nine-play drive by Texas A&M.

“We were in drop eight, and I just read the quarterback’s eyes,” London said. “He just gave me a freebie so I went out and made the play. It’s what we did all week, and I caught it. ... We kind of saw it on film as one of their goal line routes, and I was fortunate enough to get a free one.”

“I was fired up for him,” coach Jake Spavital said. “I always questioned his hands for the longest time. He tried to do a one-handed interception in practice earlier in the week, and he dropped it, but he actually caught it in the game, so I take everything back about what I said about him at practice.”

When asked what was different about the game and the drop in practice, London replied, “The lights were on me.”

London has led the Sun Belt twice in tackles, including last year with 109, and is seventh all-time in career tackles at Texas State with 345. He needs 17 to break the top five and 102 to tie the school record of 447 set by Greg Pitts from 1999 to 2002.

Soccer: Texas State is off to a 4-0 start after an overtime thriller at home against Houston Baptist ended on a penalty kick by Kaylee Davis. The Bobcats won 2-1, with the Huskies’ lone goal being the first scored on Texas State all season. The Bobcats' first three games were 1-0 victories over Incarnate Word, Prairie View A&M and Texas-San Antonio.

Davis, a senior, was named Sun Belt offensive player of the week after scoring three goals in Texas State’s first four games. She was named Sun Belt player of the year last season after tying a school record with 18 goals.

Senior goalie Heather Martin was named Sun Belt defensive player of the week. Martin, a preseason coaches’ selection for defensive player of the year, had six saves against HBU while giving up one goal. She has 10 saves this season with a save percentage of .909.

The Bobcats will be on the road to face Texas-El Paso on Friday and New Mexico State on Sunday.

Volleyball: The Bobcats (1-3) are on a three-game losing streak after falling to Rice on Tuesday at home in straight sets. They started the season with a four-set win over Liberty but lost in four to No. 14 USC last Friday and were swept by Northern Iowa on Saturday. The Bobcats will participate in the Long Beach State Classic in California this weekend.
