A man was critically injured and 40 people were displaced from their homes after a fire tore through an apartment complex north of the University of Texas campus early Thursday, fire officials said.

Firefighters responded to Park Avenue Place apartments, 306 East 30th St., around 2:42 a.m. and said they had the blaze under control by 3:30 a.m.

The man, described as in his 50s, was taken to Dell Seton Medical Center, where fire officials said he was in critical condition.

The Red Cross of Central Texas is helping the displaced residents.

All 32 apartment units have been affected by the fire, and some have fire, smoke and water damage, officials said. The cost of the damage to the complex is estimated to be about $250,000 for the structure and $50,000 for contents, officials said.
