Two restaurants in county fail health inspections

A Chinese restaurant in Round Rock failed a Williamson County health inspection last month over several infractions that included flies and roaches in the kitchen.

Hunan Lion in the Round Rock West Shopping Center and Maria’s Bar & Grill off U.S. 183 in Leander both failed their inspections by the Williamson County Cities and Health District in June, with inspectors citing several infractions. Both restaurants remained open after correcting issues listed in the report.

The inspection report for Hunan Lion listed infractions including flies and roaches seen in the kitchen, raw meats stored above cooked foods and vegetables in the walk-in cooler, to-go containers coated in liquid from raw meats and visibly soiled air vents in the kitchen.

Some infractions listed in the report for Maria’s were an employee not using gloves when handling food and when changing tasks, storage shelves in the kitchen and coolers heavily soiled with rust and debris, and black and pink build-up in the ice machine.

A food establishment fails a health inspection if it receives a score of 30 points or more, with each infraction scored differently.

Restaurants that fail inspections must pass a follow-up inspection or be shut down. Any establishments that have failed an inspection twice within 12 months are forced to close for two days and pay a fine.
