Castro raises $2.8 million in second quarter
Democratic presidential candidate Julián Castro raised $2.8 million in the second quarter, his campaign said Monday.
Of that amount, almost 40% — $1.1 million — flowed in after Castro's performance during the first Democratic presidential debate June 26, according to campaign spokeswoman Sawyer Hackett. Castro's average donation was $22.
Federal Election Commission records show that the former mayor of San Antonio and secretary of housing and urban development under former President Barack Obama now has roughly $1.1 million in cash on hand.
Mayor Pete Buttigieg of South Bend, Ind., posted the largest fundraising haul during the second quarter, $24.8 million. Former Vice President Joe Biden and U.S. Sens. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, Bernie Sanders of Vermont and Kamala Harris of California also brought in significant sums, at $21.5 million, $19.1 million, $18 million and $12 million, respectively.
Those top fundraisers also lead the pack of 2020 Democratic presidential hopefuls in the polls. Castro saw a post-debate bump in some polls, but it's too early to tell whether that will last.
Texas’ other presidential hopeful Beto O’Rourke had not yet released his fundraising numbers by Monday evening. Those numbers were due to the Federal Election Commission by midnight Monday.
O'Rourke raised more than $9 million from March 14, when he threw his hat into the ring, to March 31.
