A false report of an active shooter led some Hays County schools to briefly go into "lockout" mode Thursday afternoon, Hays County sheriff's officials said.

Sycamore Springs Middle School and Primrose School of Dripping Springs both went into lockout mode, which means people can move inside the building but no one can enter or exit it.

A report of an active shooter on U.S. 290, near Sawyer Ranch Road, circulated on Nextdoor.com and was incorrect, said Deputy Mark Andrews, Hays County sheriff's spokesman.

"There was no active shooter, and lockouts have been lifted," Andrews said.

There was a brief lockout (exterior doors locked) at Sycamore Springs Middle School this afternoon as a precaution due to police activity in the area. The lockout has been lifted and all is clear.#IamDSISD
