One person was killed and another was injured Wednesday night in a two-car crash on West Cesar Chavez Street, just west of North Lamar Boulevard, officials said.

A driver who was heading east veered into westbound traffic and collided with a pickup truck around 8:20 p.m., Austin police Sgt. Chandra Ervin said. The driver who veered into oncoming traffic died at the scene.

Investigators are unsure why the driver veered into the wrong lane, Ervin said.

“Once (first-responders) were on scene, they began life-saving measures,” Ervin said. “After a valiant effort, they were not able to bring the subject back.”

The second victim, a man who is estimated to be in his 30s, was taken to Dell Seton Medical Center with serious injuries that are not expected to be life-threatening, Austin-Travis County EMS officials said.

There were no passengers in either vehicle, Ervin said.

West Cesar Chavez was closed in both directions Wednesday night after the crash.
