Austin-based Kerbey Lane Cafe will replace Saltgrass Steak House on the Texas State University campus in San Marcos, university officials announced Friday.

A 10-year lease agreement between the university and the popular restaurant, well known for its queso and pancakes, was approved during a Texas State University System Board of Regents meetings on Friday. The lease includes two five-year renewal options, university officials said.

The cafe will be located at 221 Sessom Drive, which sits right off the Spring Lake dam and downhill from Old Main, the most recognizable, castle-like building on the Texas State campus.

Landry's, Inc., the parent company of Saltgrass Steak House, told Texas State University officials they planned to leave the popular location and let their lease agreement expire on Dec. 31.

University officials said the new Kerbey Lane Cafe is expected to open in spring 2020.

"We can’t wait to bring Kerbey Lane Cafe to San Marcos, and look forward to this being a long-term relationship with Texas State and the entire San Marcos community," said Mason Ayer, CEO of Kerbey Lane Cafe, in a university news release. "San Marcos is a community we have been wanting to serve for many years, and because we wanted to do it right, we’ve taken our time finding just the right location, and this is it."
